Origins
 
Clear quartz containing needle-like inclusions of rutile, a titanium dioxide mineral.
Known to ancient Romans as the Hair of Venus and to ancient Greeks as the Hair of Aphrodite.
The name rutile derives from the Latin rutilus, meaning reddish or glowing.
The needles occur in many colours; in this stone, they run fine and dark through clear quartz.
Each stone is unique. No two share the same internal pattern.

Product Description
 
This Mala is formed from 108 rutilated quartz beads. Each stone holds its own arrangement of fine rutile needles, formed within the clear quartz during crystallisation. Across 108 beads, no two internal patterns repeat. The piece is, in that sense, entirely singular.
 
The stones are strung on black woven silk, a deep ground against which each bead reads as clear quartz threaded with fine dark rutile. The needles surface as filaments suspended through the stone, sharp against the clarity that holds them. The piece is completed with sterling silver signature bead frames, eight millimetre Chinese Fu marker beads and a ten millimetre Fu Guru bead. A discreet silver screw clasp allows the Mala to be worn in three configurations around the neck or wrist.
