Origins

A variety of quartz coloured by iron impurities, ranging from pale yellow to deep amber.

First formally prized during the Hellenistic period in ancient Greece.

Roman priests wore citrine rings; the stone was connected with Mercury, the messenger god.

Used to decorate Scottish daggers and swords in the 17th century.

Copal is a semi-fossilised tree resin used in Aztec ceremonial incense rituals.

Product Description

This Mala pairs AAA grade citrine with copal amber across 108 beads. Citrine, the stone Roman priests wore on their hands, and copal, the resin Aztec priests burned in ceremony, counted together in a form rooted in Indian and Tibetan contemplative practice. Three civilisations. One object.

The beads are strung on olive green woven silk from a house with over 150 years of heritage. The piece includes a ten millimetre sterling silver Chinese Fu Guru bead and a discreet 925 sterling silver screw clasp allowing the Mala to be worn in three configurations.
